What’s New for the 2019 Kia Sedona?

Now in the middle of its third generation of production, the Sedona—Kia’s minivan offering—receives significant changes for the 2019 model year. The 6-speed automatic transmission gives way to a brand-new 8-speed gearbox, some tech features are updated, and the SX Limited trim is dropped, whittling down the number of available trims to four: L, LX, EX, and SX.

A three-row vehicle, the 2019 Sedona can seat up to seven people on the L trim due to the dual captain’s seats in the second row. Eight people on the other models are made possible by a second-row bench-style seat. Under the minivan’s hood is a 3.3-liter V6 engine with 276 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed automatic transmission to which the V6 is hitched includes a Sportmatic shifter for greater control over gear shifting. With its front-engine front-wheel-drive layout, the Sedona provides a fuel economy of 18/24 mpg and can tow up to 3,500 lbs. The interior is furnished with features such as tricot fabric seat trim, Slide-and-Stow technology on the second-row seats, remote keyless entry, Siri Eyes Free, a 3.5-inch OLED color digital instrumental cluster, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, four-speaker stereo system with AM/FM radio and MP3 player, a 7-inch color touchscreen, a USB port and an audio jack for connecting portable devices, and 12 cupholders. At the LX trim level, Kia provides front-seat 8-way power adjustability, 2-way power lumbar support on the driver’s side, and six-speaker audio (instead of four). The EX trim has enhancements and additions such as leather upholstery, front-seat heating, a smart key system, push-button start, a pair of rapid-charging USB 2.1 ports for portable devices, wireless charging ability, the UVO eServices telematics system, and a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio. The top-level SX is unique with its integrated memory system, a heated steering wheel, 4-way power lumbar support (instead of 2-way) on the driver’s seat, auto-dimming ability on the rearview mirror, tri-zone automatic climate control, HD Radio, 8-inch color touchscreen navigation with voice recognition technology, a SiriusXM Traffic trial subscription, and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system. For safety, the 2019 Sedona includes features such as electronic stability control with a traction control system, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, a rearview camera, cornering brake control, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, hill start assist control, and a six-airbag system with rollover mitigation. Kia adds blind-spot collision warning, forward-and-reverse park distance warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, and an engine immobilizer as a theft-deterrent mechanism at the EX level. Only the SX comes with driver attention warning, forward collision warning, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, a surround-view camera (in place of the rearview camera), and smart cruise control with stop-and-go technology.
