What’s New for the 2019 Kia Sportage?

Around since 1993, the Kia Sportage is one of the world’s first compact SUVs. After 11 years of production, Kia Motors kicked off the second production cycle as a crossover vehicle, which meant that the Sportage was fashioned as more fuel-efficient and commuter-oriented than traditional off-road-oriented SUVs. By 2019, the Sportage was at the tail end of its fourth production cycle, split into LX, EX, and SX Turbo trims.

The 2019 Kia Sportage’s base-level LX trim now offers fewer features, and heated rear seats are no longer available. Apart from that, the compact crossover SUV essentially remains the same. At the LX and EX trim levels, the 2019 Sportage is powered by a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which produces 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line SX Turbo has a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 under its hood. Its horsepower is rated at 237 horsepower if the SX Turbo has an all-wheel drive and 240 horsepower if it has a front-wheel drive; the torque is rated at 260 lb-ft. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, although the SX Turbo has steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for greater gear-shifting convenience.

A five-seater, the 2019 Kia Sportage provides a passenger volume of 98.6 cubic feet and cargo volume of 30.7 cubic feet. Standard comfort and convenience features include cruise control, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, six-speaker audio, AM/FM radio, a trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack for connecting portable media devices, and a 5-inch touchscreen. Upper-level trims have enhancements or additions such leather upholstery, front-seat heating and power adjustability, seating ventilation, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 4.2-inch TFT color display, a smart key system with push-button engine start (which upgrades the remote keyless entry system), an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, UVO infotainment integration, a USB port for charging your portable media devices, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, HD Radio, an 8-speaker 320-watt Harman Kardon sound system, a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen (in place of the 5-inch), and a navigation system. For safety, the 2019 Sportage starts off with features such as a rearview camera, electronic stability control, traction control, an anti-lock braking system, LED daytime running lights, brake assist, hill start assist control, downhill brake control, and six airbags (two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and two roof-mounted side curtain airbags). Upgrading the EX trim are features such as lane change assist, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Exclusive to the SX Turbo are autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, high beam assist, and parking assist with front and rear sensors to boost the rearview camera.
