It makes sense to shop for a subcompact crossover if you expect to spend most of your time in the streets and roads of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Huntsville and squeezing into tight parking spaces. However, the 2023 Kia Soul is a subcompact crossover SUV with a spacious interior that defies that subcompact classification. If you want a small SUV with unique styling, great practicality, and a price that matches its diminutive proportions, it’s hard to look past a new Kia Soul.
Despite the current 2023 Kia Soul looking quite different from the two generations that preceded it, you’re still not going to mistake it for anything else. The Soul has always been a small vehicle with a big character, which doesn’t change with the 2023 model. The front fascia is strikingly contemporary, but the distinctive silhouette stays true to form to ensure you don’t mistake the Soul for anything else.
The 2023 Soul is available in four trim levels. The lineup starts with the keenly-priced LX model, and then you have the S, GT-Line, and the top-of-the-range EX. Retail shoppers will probably overlook the entry-level LX with its steel wheels, and it’s hard to resist the lure of the range-topper as the price difference between the S, and the EX is insignificant.
The 2023 Kia Soul is a straightforward model that delivers everything you need and nothing you don’t need. The modest four-trim-level lineup illustrates that philosophy and the powertrain underlines it. For a start, there’s no such thing as a 2023 Kia Soul with all-wheel-drive. Every model is standard front-wheel drive, as there’s little need for anything else in the urban jungle where the Soul will spend most of its time.
Every model also uses the same engine. That powerplant is a 2.0-liter inline-four that develops 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, which gets to those front wheels through a CVT transmission. The LX, S, and GT-Line versions of the Soul return EPA fuel economy ratings of 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined. However, the range-topping EX is even better, with 29 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg combined.
All versions of the 2023 Kia Soul feature a generous standard specification, and the top EX trim level will be hard to resist for many at such an affordable price that’s not much higher than the lower trim levels. Standard EX features include 18-inch alloy wheels, premium cloth trim, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Navigation, Kia Connect, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
But you can get the top model to get the Soul’s full complement of standard safety features. All models come with Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist w/ Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist. And all models above the base model also get standard Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Lane Change Assist.
The 2023 Kia Soul is a unique subcompact crossover SUV full of character that offers impressive interior space, good fuel economy, and attractive pricing.
