If the 2024 Kia Sportage tells us anything, it has to be that Kia isn’t afraid to be bold when it comes to the design of its most successful models. It must be tempting to make only minor changes when producing a new version of a big-selling model like the Sportage. However, when you see earlier Sportage models on the roads of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and anywhere in Alabama, it’s easy to see that Kia has a track record of boldly redesigning its highly successful compact crossover SUV. The 2024 Sportage is the second year of this generation that’s bigger and bolder than its predecessor and is also available with powerful and highly efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The 2024 Kia Sportage lineup has seven different trim levels, and that’s before we even start considering the hybrid (HEV) and plug-in (PHEV) versions of this exciting new model. The 2024 lineup begins with the entry-level LX trim level, and then the range goes to the EX, X-Line AWD, SX, SX Prestige, before X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trims take the Sportage to new levels of off-road capability.
It’s pretty evident that trim levels that have AWD in the name get all-wheel-drive as part of their standard specification, but front-wheel-drive models are also available to upgrade to AWD if a customer is prepared to pay extra.
The same powertrain is under the hood of all non-hybrid 2024 Kia Sportage models. The engine is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four that provides the Sportage with 187 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque that now goes to the front or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Along with the dramatic new exterior styling, the hybrid powertrains found in the Sportage HEV and Sportage PHEV models are perhaps the main headline grabbers for the 2024 model year of the compact Kia crossover. The hybrid system that both models use centers around a 1.6-liter turbo-four gas engine that helps make these versions more potent than the gas-only versions of the Sportage. The Sportage HEV (hybrid) has a 1.49-kWh battery pack and an electric motor that produces a combined 226 horsepower. Sportage PHEV (plug-in hybrid) models feature a 13.8-kWh battery that allows up to 32 miles of driving in electric-only mode.
It’s easy, and possibly a little lazy, to say that the 2024 Kia Sportage comes very well equipped at all trim levels, but it does. Nothing illustrates that better than all trim levels from the SX upwards coming with a standard panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade and a Smart Power Liftgate. All 2024 Kia Sportage trims also get LED front and rear lights, high beam assist, auto headlight control, and alloy wheels that range between 17- and 19 inches, depending on the model. For 2024, all Sportage models now come standard with second-row seat airbags and LED projector headlights.
It’s common for genuine off-road capability to be beyond the AWD systems of many Sportage competitors because on-road performance is now the priority. Many owners of compact crossover SUV rivals of the Sportage will never leave the pavement, but you can if you want to with X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trim levels offering proper off-road capability. These range-topping models don’t just look the part either. Both models come with Available Active AWD with a center locking differential, multi-terrain drive modes, and X-Pro exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in a Matte Black finish wrapped in BFGoodrich all-terrain tires.
Other automakers might have been more minimalist in redesigning a model as successful as the Sportage, but that’s not how Kia operates. The latest 2024 Kia Sportage will turn heads as you drive along. The exterior styling complements the new potent and highly efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and the greater off-road capability this Sportage boasts over any that came before.
